The Fruit of the Spirit is Faithfulness

Text: "The fruit of the Spirit is... faithfulness..." Gal. 5:23

Theme: You should be faithful, and you can be with the help of the Holy Spirit.

The fruit of the Spirit is FAITH/FAITHFULNESS.

"The Faithful" was the favorite and most common name for Christians in the first century (according to Merrill Unger).

Today, it is like the writer to Proverbs says, "Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness; but a FAITHFUL man who can find?" Proverbs 20:6

Notice three thoughts about FAITHFULNESS:

"Know therefore that the Lord thy God, He is God, the FAITHFUL God..." Deut. 7:9

"Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens: and thy FAITHFULNESS reacheth unto the clouds." Psalm 36:5

"I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever; with my mouth will I make known thy FAITHFULNESS to all generations." Psalm 89:1

"God is FAITHFUL, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord." 1 Corinthians 1:9

"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man, but God is FAITHFUL, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." 1 Corinthians 10:13

"If we confess our sins, He is FAITHFUL..." 1 John 1:9

SONG - Great Is Thy Faithfulness

A. God meets EVERY need.
B. God is ALWAYS available.
C. God NEVER sleeps.
D. God NEVER turns His back on me.

II. You should be FAITHFUL.

READ 1 Corinthians 4:1-2

A. It is not optional, but REQUIRED.
ILLUS. Parable of talents - READ Matthew 25:14f and notice emphasis on FAITHFULNESS (mentioned 4 times)
B. You are to be FAITHFUL with those things which God has made you a steward of (1 Corinthians 4:2)
1. You are a steward of TIME.

2. You are a steward of TALENT/SPIRITUAL GIFTS.

3. You are a steward of MONEY.

4. You are a steward of the GOSPEL OF CHRIST.

III. You can be FAITHFUL. (Galatians 5:23)

A. If you are saved, you have all of the Holy Spirit you can get.
"If any man have not the Spirit of Christ..."

"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you...?" 1 Corinthians 6:19

B. If you have the Holy Spirit, then you have all of the fruit of the Spirit.
C. If you have the fruit of the Spirit, then you have the ability to be faithful.

Will you be faithful?

With your time?

With your talents/spiritual gifts?

With your money?

With the gospel of Jesus Christ?

Thank God, He is faithful.

You SHOULD BE faithful.

God has given you the ability to be FAITHFUL, for "the fruit of the Spirit is... faithfulness..." Galatians 5:23

How wonderful if people would look at us, and call us "the FAITHFUL."
