"How Is It That Ye Have No Faith?"

Read: Mark 4:33-5:1

Text: (Mark 4:40 KJV) And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

Theme: In light of Jesus Christ, how can we not believe?


Introduction:

And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

(Acts 24:25 KJV) And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

(Acts 26:28 KJV) Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.

 

QUESTION - What are some of the reasons mentioned in our text for today, why the disciples should have had faith?


I. The Savior's Purpose (Mark 4:35, 5:1)

QUESTION - What did Jesus plan to do?

QUESTION - Is there anything about the purpose / plan of Jesus Christ that should give us faith?

"Let us pass over unto the other side."

A. His PLAN was safe passage.

B. This implied a PROMISE of safe passage!

QUESTION - What is His plan for us, today?

C. He promises us safe passage, too.

1. To the other side.

(John 5:24 KJV) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

(John 6:37 KJV) All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

(John 6:40 KJV) And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

(John 6:47 KJV) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

(John 10:9 KJV) I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

(John 11:25-26 KJV) Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

(Mark 4:40 KJV) And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

2. Throughout the journey.

(Rom 8:28 KJV) And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

(1 Cor 10:13 KJV) There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

II. The Savior's Presence (Mark 4:36)

"… they took Him… in the ship."

A. He was WITH them.

QUESTION - Does this apply to us? How?

QUESTION - Does the Savior's presence give us reason to have faith in spite of life's storms? Why?

B. He is WITH us.

(Mat 1:23 KJV) Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

(Mat 28:20 KJV) Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

C. He is also IN us.

(Gal 2:20 KJV) I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

(Col 1:27 KJV) To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

(Mark 4:40 KJV) And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

III. The Disciples' Problem (Mark 4:37)

"And there arose a great storm…"

QUESTION - Had this group of men experienced storms at sea before?

QUESTION - What about this story leads us to believe that this was a particularly terrifying and devastating storm?

QUESTION - How does this apply to us?

QUESTION - What do you think was the purpose of this storm? Who sent it and why?

A. Such storms are common in Galilee.

B. Such storms are common in life.

1. Storms sometimes reprove.

ILLUS. Jonah

2. Storms sometimes approve.

ILLUS. Disciples here? Being taught and tested?

3. Storms sometimes originate with God.

(Jonah 1:4 KJV) But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

4. Storms sometimes originate with Satan.

(Mark 4:40 KJV) And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

IV. The Savior's Peace (Mark 4:38)

"And He was… asleep on a pillow."

QUESTION - In the midst of their terror, what do you suppose the disciples thought as they saw Jesus sleeping?

QUESTION - Why was there a pillow on a fishing boat? Is it significant?

QUESTION - How does this apply to us? Is there anything about the peace of the Savior that should give us faith in spite of life's storms?

A. Nothing surprises the Savior.

QUOTE "Has it ever occurred to you that nothing has ever occurred to God?"

1. No sin.

2. No difficulty.

3. No circumstance.

"But Preacher, you don't know what I'm going through!" (True… but He does!)

B. Nothing frightens the Savior.

C. If we see His peace, we can have peace.

(Mark 4:40 KJV) And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

V. The Savior's Power (Mark 4:39)

QUESTION - Had the disciples already seen manifestations of Jesus' power?

A. His power had already been demonstrated.

(Bible study:)

1. Casting out demons (Mark 1:23f)

2. Healing Peter's mother in law (Mark 1:31)

3. Cleansing a leper (Mark 1:41)

4. Healing the sick of the palsy (Mark 2:11)

5. Straightening the withered hand (Mark 3:5)

6. Multiple healings and cleansings (Mark 3:10-11)

QUESTION - Why should these earlier demonstrations have given them faith during the storm? Why didn't they have faith if they knew His power?

B. His power was now proven to be INDISPUTABLE.

QUESTION - How does this apply to us, and help us to have faith in spite of life's storms?

(Mark 4:40 KJV) And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

VI. The Disciples' Panic (Mark 4:41)

QUESTION - Why did they fear?

A. God's presence has ALWAYS caused awe.

ILLUS. Moses' shining face elicited fear.

ILLUS. Moses feared when he saw the burning bush and realized it was the glory of God.

ILLUS. Children of Israel were terrified when God appeared on the mountain.

ILLUS. Job said, "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes. (Job 42:5-6)

B. They feared because they saw that He is God!

(Mark 4:40 KJV) And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?


Conclusion:
