Some of the "Go's" of Jesus

Read: Mark 16:9f

Text: (Mark 16:15 KJV) And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Theme: The Christian life is one of "going."

Introduction:

(Isa 1:18 KJV) Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

(Mat 11:28 KJV) Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

(Mat 28:19-20 KJV) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:) Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

(Mark 16:15 KJV) And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

(John 6:37 KJV) All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

I. GO and learn.

(Mat 9:13 KJV) But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

A. At this point, the Pharisees simply didn't understand. (vs. 11)

B. Jesus' advice was "GO LEARN."

C. Believers must continue learning.

1. Turning points and stumbling blocks will always be there.

SOLUTION - Go and learn.

ILLUS. Paul teaching Peter in gal. 2:11f

2. Stagnation in the Christian life is always a real possibility.

SOLUTION - Go and learn

ILLUS. Pastor friend of mine who decided to study for his masters and then for his doctorate degree, all while pastoring a busy and growing church. He simply didn't want to grow stale in his walk.

ILLUS. Dr. Tom Malone is the pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Pontiac, Michigan, and has been in the ministry for over 60 years. His wife, Joyce Malone, has faithfully ministered beside him during that time. Recently, Mrs. Malone was asked what she thought was the major factor in Dr. Malone's longevity in ministry. She replied, "I think he studies the Bible more now than ever before."

ILLUS. Paul - (2 Tim 4:13 KJV) The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments.

NOTE - The above verse is particularly meaningful after you've stood within the cell at the Mamertine Prison in Rome, and seen Paul's circumstances as he penned those words.

II. GO and work.

(Mat 21:28 KJV) But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

Work, for the night is coming,
Work through the morning hours;
Work while the dew is sparkling;
Work, 'mid springing flowers.
Work, when the day grows brighter,
Work in the glowing sun;
Work, for the night is coming,
When man's work is done.

A. Man was created to work.

(Gen 2:15 KJV) And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

B. I think heaven will include work.

C. Every aspect of Christianity involves work.

1. Prayer is work.

(Col 4:12 KJV) Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

ILLUS. Jesus in Gethsemane.

ILLUS. The story is told of "Praying Hyde" of the time he went to pray by prostrating himself in the snow, and prayed until the snow was completely melted all around him.

2. Understanding God's word is work.

(Eccl 12:12 KJV) And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

(2 Tim 2:15 KJV) Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

3. Soul winning is work.

(2 Tim 4:5 KJV) But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

D. Jesus teaches us to not shun the work He has called us to.

"GO and work…"

(John 9:4 KJV) I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

 III. GO quickly.

(Mat 28:7 KJV) And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

A. The rich fool thought he had all the time in the world.

READ Luke 12:16-21

B. Time is the one thing we have that can NEVER be replaced.

1. Money can be replaced.

ILLUS. My ex-employer, H. Ross Perot, once had the distinction of having lost more money than anybody else, in that his worth on paper took a huge beating on the stock market. Of course, that was temporary, and he remains a very wealthy man today.

2. Health can be replaced.

ILLUS. Althea Tharp, wife of a dear pastor friend of mine, was diagnosed with brain cancer. Through the prayers and intercession of God's people, she was given a year of health and function that the doctors thought impossible.

ILLUS. Hezekiah, through prayer, was given 15 extra years of life and health after God had already told him his life and health were ended.

3. Happiness can be replaced.

ILLUS. Job - READ Job 42:10f

4. Success can be replaced.

(Prov 24:16 KJV) For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

ILLUS. Thomas Edison failed over 700 times in trying to invent the light bulb. Asked once if this didn't discourage him, he replied, 'No, I just know 700 ways that you can't make it work."

ILLUS. Babe Ruth struck out more than any other player in baseball.

5. Even children can be replaced.

ILLUS. Job

6. TIME LOST, though, is GONE FOREVER.

C. Christians need to GO QUICKLY.

(Eph 5:15-16 KJV) See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

IV. GO and do likewise.

(Luke 10:37 KJV) And he said, He that showed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

A. The Samaritan showed mercy.

1. To an enemy.

2. To a person who probably would not have done the same for him.

3. When nobody else was willing to do it.

4. At his own expense.

B. Christians should GO and do likewise.

ILLUS. I remember a time in my Bible college days when there was simply no money, and my wife and I were discouraged. A dear brother by the name of Lyons Lawson, one of the deacons in the church, came and helped with a bag of groceries. We never knew how he even knew of our plight, but we were greatly encouraged by his kindness and provision.

 V. GO and sin no more.

(John 8:11 KJV) She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

A. Some Christians might re-word this to "GO and sin SOME more!"

B. In this "GO" we see much:

1. The mercy of our Savior.

2. The expectation of our Savior.

(Heb 12:6 KJV) For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

ILLUS. Nathan to King David, "Thou art the man!"

(1 John 5:16 KJV) If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

ILLUS. Ananias and Sapphira, Acts 5

Conclusion:

(John 6:35, 37 KJV) And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
