The Man Who Kissed The Door To Heaven And Went To Hell

Read: Mark 14:43-53

Text: (Mark 14:45 KJV) And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.

Theme: Those professing Jesus Christ should examine themselves, whether they are really saved.

Introduction:

I. Jesus Christ Is The Door To Heaven.

A. There are many views about how to get to heaven.

1. Some say "Ya gotta live it!"

SONG - Gold City (gospel quartet) sings a song by this title.

QUESTION - What is wrong with this belief?

(Titus 3:5 KJV) Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

(Eph 2:8 KJV) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

2. Some say, "You must be baptized."

QUESTION - What is wrong with this belief?

ANSWER - Baptism is an ordinance that believers should follow AFTER salvation. It is not a requirement FOR salvation.

ILLUS. Thief on the cross didn't get baptized, and yet - (Luke 23:43 KJV) And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

3. Some say you must be members of a particular church or denomination.

QUESTION - What is wrong with this belief?

ANSWER - Again, it is a form of works salvation.

QUESTION - What are some other views you have heard put forth concerning "how to get to heaven?"

B. Regardless of what others say, according to the Bible, there is ONLY ONE DOOR, and that is Jesus Christ.

(John 10:7, 9 KJV) Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

QUESTION - When Jesus described Himself as "the door" what truth or truths do you think He was conveying?

QUESTION - If Jesus is indeed "the door to Heaven" what does that mean to you and me?

QUESTION - If Jesus is indeed "the door to Heaven" what impact should it have on my life? How should it impact the interactions that I have with others?

1. The door to heaven opens only one way.

ILLUS. Painting of Christ knocking… illustrates fact that He won't open the door. You must open the door of your heart from the inside.

SONG - "The Savior is waiting to enter you heart, Why won't you let Him come in?"

2. The door to heaven opens onto the most exclusive club in the world.

(Mat 7:13-14 KJV) Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

(John 14:6 KJV) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

(Acts 4:12 KJV) Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

(1 John 5:12 KJV) He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

3. The door is an entrance, but not an exit.

ILLUS. Turnstiles that will let you in, but not out!

I.e. once you are saved, you are always saved!

(John 5:24 KJV) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

4. The door to heaven will open for anyone.

(Acts 16:31 KJV) And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

(Rom 10:13 KJV) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

SONG - Whosoever will may come!

II. Judas kissed the Door to Heaven, and then went to hell.

(Mark 14:45 KJV) And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.

QUESTION - Let's talk about Judas for a minute. What do we know about him?

QUESTION - If we had no other scripture except for the passage we read this morning, what would we know about him? (See vs. 43 - "one of the twelve")

QUESTION - Let's talk about this kiss for a few minutes. Describe the scene for me in your own words. What do you believe Judas did?

QUESTION - Is there anything significant in the fact that Judas used this particular symbolic gesture to betray Jesus? Why?

QUESTION - How would it make Jesus feel to be betrayed in this way?

QUESTION - What do you think this entire scene demonstrates about Judas Iscariot?

DEFINITION - Kiss = Greek KATAPHILEO, meaning, "to kiss fervently." The compound (i.e. KATA and PHILEO) indicates a prolonged kissing designed to give the crowd a chance to see the one to be seized." (Linguistic Key to the Greek New Testament)

QUOTE (Ray C. Stedman) - "… the kiss of Judas. Mark uses the normal word for kiss, which means, "to love," in telling of the arrangement Judas had made with the chief priests. They were to seize the one whom he kissed. But in the actual moment, when Judas carries this out, Mark uses an emphasized form of that word, a word that means a prolonged kiss, a lover's kiss. I do not think there is anything in all the annals of treachery more contemptuous than this kiss of Judas' -- a deliberate, prolonged, apparently loving act, done with cold determination to accomplish his own purpose."

QUOTE (Alfred Edersheim, The Life and Times of Jesus The Messiah) - "As the band reached the Garden, Judas went somewhat in advance of them, and reached Jesus just as He had roused the three and was preparing to go and meet His captors. He saluted Him, ‘Hail, Rabbi,’ so as to be heard by the rest, and not only kissed but covered Him with kisses, kissed Him repeatedly, loudly, effusively (KATAPHILEO)."

QUESTION - What was Jesus' response to Judas kiss?

(Matthew 26:50 KJV) Friend, wherefore art thou come?"

(Luke 22:48 KJV) "Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?"

QUESTION - What important truth about US does this entire vignette from Judas' life illustrate?

ANSWER - Outward appearances are not sufficient to prove inward faith. We must examine ourselves whether we are in the faith!

A. Some are only "outwardly" Christian.

1. Judas looked saved.

2. Judas acted saved.

(Mark 6:7 KJV) And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;

(Mark 6:12-13 KJV) And they went out, and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

3. In spite of his lost condition, NOT ONE of the other disciples even momentarily considered Judas to be the possible traitor, considering themselves more likely candidates than he!

Cf. Mark 14:19-20

B. Some are "outwardly" Christian, but in reality, LOST!

1. JUDAS WENT TO HELL!

(John 17:12 KJV) While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

NOTE - THINK ABOUT WHAT THIS MEANS!

QUOTE - "It does not take a decision to go to hell."

QUOTE (Billy Sunday) - "A man is a fool who thinks, because he does not believe in hell, that his opinion shuts the door and puts out the fire."

2. There are many other examples of some that were "professors" but not "possessors":

(Mat 7:22 KJV) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

(1 John 2:19 KJV) They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

READ Matthew 25:1-13

QUESTION - What outward difference was there between the 5 "saved" virgins and the 5 "lost" virgins?

ANSWER - None

QUESTION - How could anybody tell by looking at these 10 virgins, which were going to the marriage and which were not?

ANSWER - No way

QUESTION - What should all 10 virgins have done to ensure they were all going to the marriage?

ANSWER - Examine their lamps in advance

QUESTION - What application can we make to our own lives from both Judas' failure to be truly saved and these 5 virgins failing to be ready for the marriage?

Conclusion:

(Mark 14:45 KJV) And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.

QUOTE (Billy Sunday) "A man can slip into hell with his hand on the doorknob of heaven."

QUOTE (Paul, (1 Cor 9:27 KJV) "But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway."

(Mark 14:45 KJV) And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.

Judas - the man who kissed the door to heaven and went to hell. May God help us to examine ourselves, whether we are in the faith. May God help us to NOT be like Judas.
