"Meanderings in Mark"
Series on Mark, Lesson 39
Jesus' Teaching On Divorce
Read: Mark 10:1-12
Text: (Mark 10:9 KJV) What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
Theme: Divorce is not God's will for the Christian.
SONG - People Need The Lord
(2 Tim 3:16 KJV) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
(1 Pet 5:8 KJV) Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
I. It is NEVER God's will for a couple to divorce. (vss. 9, 11-12)
A. It is breaking an unbreakable bond. (vs. 8)
B. It is breaking an unbreakable vow.
READ Marriage vows (as reminder)
(Num 30:2 KJV) If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.
(Deu 23:21 KJV) When thou shalt vow a vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it: for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee.
(Eccl 5:4-5 KJV) When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.
C. God HATES it!
(Mal 2:16 KJV) For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
II. However, it is OCCASIONALLY allowed.
(Mat 19:9 KJV) And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
A. For fornication.
(Perhaps for abuse?)
B. STILL not God's will, but an allowance because of man's sin! (cf. Matthew 19:8!)
ILLUS. I once counseled a man who was bent on divorcing his wife. I'll never forget him looking at me and calmly stating, "I believe I've got God's blessing on this." NO WAY!
C. Marriage is not easy. It takes work.
1. It's not easy being a husband.
2. It's not easy being a wife.
3. Marriages don't just WORK. They TAKE WORK.
ILLUS. I always cringe when I hear someone give the excuse "Well, it just didn't work" as their reason for divorce.
D. Christians should ALWAYS try to work things out.
(Jer 32:27 KJV) Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?
1. By doing the things that you did to win each other!
2. By TALKING to each other.
ILLUS. Good book, Communication: Key To Your Marriage, by H. Norman Wright
3. By following the Biblical pattern for the home.
4. MOSTLY, by keeping yourself RIGHT WITH GOD!
ILLUS. Cross - horizontal / vertical relationships.
III. Marriage is SACRED.
A. Because it is God's first institution.
(Gen 2:24 KJV) Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
1. Instituted for companionship.
2. Instituted for propagation.
B. Because it is the closest thing to heaven we have on earth (or hell, depending on you).
C. Because it is a picture of Christ and the church.
READ Eph 5:21-33, esp. vs. 32
(Rev 19:7 KJV) Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
