Theme: It is WORTH IT to serve Jesus.

Introduction:

I. It costs to serve Jesus.

A. Some things must be left behind.

"Lo, we have left all…" (vs. 28)

1. This world's value system must be forsaken.

ILLUS. Young man in vss. 17-22 who couldn't part with worldly riches.

2. Personal ambition must be forsaken.

"… for my sake, and the gospel's…" (vs. 29)

B. Some things happen to Christians that don't happen to non-Christians.

"… with persecutions…"

(Mat 5:11 KJV) Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

(2 Tim 3:12 KJV) Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

1. Jesus always offered a CHALLENGE rather than a BRIBE.

(Mat 16:24 KJV) Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

(Luke 14:26 KJV) If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

(Luke 14:33 KJV) So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

2. Many have found Christianity to be a hard road.

ILLUS. Paul:

(2 Cor 11:24 KJV) Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;

ILLUS. Peter / John / other disciples:

(Acts 5:40 KJV) And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

II. It pays to serve Jesus!

A. "… now in this time…"

1. Nobody has more family than a Christian.

ILLUS. Paul: (Rom 16:13 KJV) Salute Rufus chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine.

2. Nobody has more wealth than a Christian.

(Luke 6:38 KJV) Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

3. Nobody has more peace than a Christian.

(Even those who suffer greatly in this life, still say IT'S WORTH IT!)

ILLUS. Job:

(Job 19:25 KJV) For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.

(Job 23:10 KJV) But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

ILLUS. Joni Errickson

(Psa 119:165 KJV) Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

(Phil 4:7 KJV) And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

B. "… in the world to come…"

1. And that world is coming soon!

(Luke 12:40 KJV) Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

(John 14:1 KJV) Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

(Acts 1:11 KJV) Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

(James 5:8 KJV) Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.

(Rev 22:20 KJV) He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

2. We will live FOREVER!

"… eternal life…"

SONG Amazing Grace - last verse - 10000 years is just not enough!

ILLUS. Size of a Googol, a Googolplex (huge, unimaginable numbers, but just a moment in eternity!

3. We will live FOREVER in HEAVEN!

Conclusion:

ILLUS. "The Marines are looking for a few good men."

(Mark 10:30 KJV) But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.
