What If It's All A Lie?

Read: 1 Corinthians 15:1-20

Text: (1 Cor 15:13 KJV) But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

Theme: Everything depends on the resurrection, and falls without it.

Introduction:

I. If there is no resurrection, Jesus lied. (vs. 13)

A. He promised to rise from the dead.

(John 2:19 KJV) Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

B. He promised that if He rose, we would too.

(John 11:25-26 KJV) Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

C. He would be the biggest liar ever.

1. Think of the thousands fooled!

QUOTE - "He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in still another village, where He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty. Then for three years He was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or owned a house. He didn't go to college. He never visited a big city. He never traveled two hundred miles from the place where He was born. He did none of the things one usually associates with greatness. He had no credentials but Himself. He was only thirty-three when the tide of public opinion turned against Him. His friends ran away. He was turned over to His enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While He was dying, His executioners gambled for His clothing, the only property He had on earth. When He was dead, He was laid in a borrowed grave, through he pity of a friend. Nineteen centuries have come and gone, and today He is the central figure of the human race and the leader of mankind's progress. All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, have not affected the life of man on this earth as much as that ONE SOLITARY LIFE"

2. If no resurrection, it was all a lie! Amazing.

(1 Cor 15:13 KJV) But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

II. If there is no resurrection, Preaching is Vain. (vs. 14)

A. God chose preaching as a tool.

(1 Cor 1:18-21 KJV) For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

B. Think of all the preachers that have come and gone.

Noah, Nehemiah, David, Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Peter, John, Paul, Billy Sunday, D.L. Moody, John R. Rice, Tom Malone…

C. Every word of it is lies, if there is no resurrection.

(1 Cor 15:14 KJV) And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain

III. If there is no resurrection, Faith is Vain. (vs. 14b)

A. Faith is the key word to the Christian.

(Acts 16:31 KJV) And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

(Rom 1:17 KJV) For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

(2 Cor 5:7 KJV) (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

(Eph 2:8 KJV) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

(Heb 11:6 KJV) But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

B. The basis of faith is the resurrection.

(Rom 1:4 KJV) And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

C. If there is no resurrection, then there is NOTHING TO BELIEVE IN!

1. Christianity is no different then, than Islam.

2. Christianity is no different then, than Buddhism.

3. Christianity is no different then, than Hinduism.

4. Christianity is no different then, than paganism.

5. Christianity is no different then, than mythology.

(1 Cor 15:14 KJV) And if Christ be not risen, then … your faith is also vain.

IV. If there is no resurrection, Christians are false witnesses (vs. 15)

A. Start with Paul.

1. Witnessed to the known world. (Lied to them all?)

2. Wrote 13 (some say 14) books of the New Testament. (should we tear them out of our Bibles?)

B. What of Peter?.

1. Preached to thousands on Pentecost. (3000 deceived?)

2. Wrote 2 books of the New Testament (and most believe Mark is a compilation of his teachings as well. Should we tear these out of our Bibles, too?)

C. What of John?

1. Wrote 5 books.

2. Since he was the last of the apostles to die, he may have witnessed to more. Did he lie to more?

D. Christians throughout the ages.

E. Those in this church.

F. How about the person who witnessed to you?

G. HOW ABOUT YOU? YOU HAVE WITNESSED TO OTHERS! YOU ARE A LIAR IF THERE IS NO RESURRECTION!

(1 Cor 15:15 KJV) Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

V. If there is no resurrection, you are still a sinner. (vs. 17)

A. His death was not enough.

(Rom 5:10 KJV) For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

1. His good example was not enough to save you.

2. His teachings are not enough to save you.

3. His life THIS SIDE OF THE CROSS was not enough to save you.

4. There had to be a resurrection!

(Rom 1:4 KJV) And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

B. If there is no resurrection, then you are still lost!

1. You are still an enemy of God.

(Isa 53:6 KJV) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

(Col 1:21 KJV) And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled

2. You are still daily coming short of the mark.

(Rom 3:23 KJV) For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

3. You are still damned to an eternal hell.

QUOTE (Jonathan Edwards) - "Unconverted men walk over the pit of hell on a rotten covering, and there are innumerable places in this covering so weak that they will not bear their weight, and these places are not seen."

(1 Cor 15:17 KJV) And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

VI. If there is no resurrection, your loved ones are gone forever. (vs. 18)

A. We've all said goodbye to loved ones, comforted to believe we would see them again.

B. If there is no resurrection, though, there is no such hope.

NOTE - This is the meaning of Paul's comment in (1 Cor 15:29 KJV) Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

(1 Cor 15:18 KJV) Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

VII. If there is no resurrection, we are miserable creatures, indeed. (vs. 19)

A. Paul, no doubt, was thinking of his own sufferings, and wondering why he would go through such a life if there were no resurrection.

READ 2 Cor. 11:23-12:1

B. Why was John Huss burned at the stake, if there is no resurrection?

C. Why was Stephen stoned, if there is no resurrection?

D. Why was James beheaded if there is no resurrection?

E. Why was Peter crucified upside down on an "X" shaped cross, if there is no resurrection?

F. Why was Paul martyred by Nero if there is no resurrection?

G. Why have countless millions given their lives for Christ, if there is no resurrection?
H. Why must we "take up our cross daily and follow Him" if there is no resurrection?

(1 Cor 15:19 KJV) If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

Conclusion:

(1 Cor 15:20 KJV) But now is Christ risen from the dead!

Hallelujah! Glory!

(1 Cor 15:20 KJV) But now is Christ risen from the dead!
